  1. I bought all my solar equipment before moving off grid, except for the batteries. This includes the wire, the m4 connectors, and crimping tool. I spent around $3830, that includes 380 amp hrs of batteries after moving here, they cost me $1125. I have since added $472 buying 8 used 9 year old panels with an output of around 275 watts each. I now have a system that can output 17050 watts a day over an average 5.5 hour day. I have more energy than I use most days, cloudy days not quite enough. I will be adding around 600 more watts of panels to my system next year.

  2. On string vs micro, what about "clipping"? Where the inverter cannot absorb the full output of the panel at all times? Do you just "oversize" the inverter?

  3. Don't understand why anyone pays a company to do solar on your roof solar panels are cheap massive companies upgrading have 200watt panels for sale for $20 each everywhere get 20 of them a 3000watt inverter for $1000 buy 4 120ah lithium (lifepo4) batterys for $2000 and there you have unlimited power for cheap as

  4. why would you put micro inverters on solar panels to convert that energy to a/c then later convert it to dc to go into batteries? makes no sense. doesn't solar panels produce dc that you charge the batteries directly then use an inverter to pull dc energy off batteries and convert that to a/c.

  5. Dear….the scary thing is "batteries" and you didn't mention much about it. Second you didn't mention about temperature. The panels are not conducting electricity only they conduct heat also. And heat is number one batteries enemy. Replacing batteries frequently make the whole solar system not worthy.
You haven't put cost after 10 years. However we still thank you for your effort on providing some info. about solar power.

  6. I've had solar for 3 years and not all that great not a waste of money but not the life changing earth saving money saving miracle people made it out to be. Honestly would I do it again no not where I live now maybe if I move to a sunny state I would try it again.

  7. This was an amazing, informative video. I could listen to you lecture on just about any topic. Thanks for taking the time to explain in such a meaningful way. You could do an amazing job as a sales rep!

  8. Here's my take. If you need government incentives to make your solar system worthwhile, that only means one thing. The solar system is not going to pay for itself. Government incentive is a fancy way of saying you are getting other taxpayers to pay for your toy. So don't buy into this B.S; that solar is the way to go. If solar was that good for everyone, you wouldn't need gov incentives.

Solar is for poor man. I don't mean poverty poor. I just mean you're not rich. If I was a rich guy with a super nice house, why would I want to make my house ugly with solar panels? Here's what I think should happen, instead of putting stupid looking solar panels in each house, each township or each region should install a solar farm paid for by local taxes. Get those ugly panels away from my house and put it somewhere else. I am for going green just don't make my house ugly.

  9. Did you notice your moon poster in the background is "fake" – the phases are mirrored and not real – Now you cant unsee it 😀

  10. It’s good to see how solar energy works but it’s also good to know where the materials used to build them are coming from and in which condition we’re getting them
Drcongo provides 60% of the world materials used for solar energy including electrical transportation
But in which condition we get those materials?
Millions of people already died from conflicts caused by army groups sponsored by multinational companies with complicity of the so called powerful nations
Are we going to stay quiet and let those innocent people being killed just because we want to drive a nice car or having electricity in house ?
We all concerned about what it’s going on right now in east of Congo
Take time to think how you love your family and the pain you would have you to loose your love one
Me and you we can give hope to those people who have been rejected and killed for no reason

  11. Lots of comments below saying solar doesn't work in England (that I guess don't come from people in England with Solar PV). We've had solar just North of London for ten years & still generate 800kWh/kWp each year which for us payed back in 8 years. It's cool & windy which keeps the PV cooler and increases output, it also rains a lots which keeps them clean so no cleaning needed. Lastly in the UK solar installers have to have independent insurance so if you have a problem this is fixed even if the installer has gone bust.

  12. We do not want fun,we want clarity , go as difficult as you know. Otherwise we all are going – have to study in China.

  13. I chuckle every time you say that I am a solar sales person and I love this job I get to help people all day long and I’m not over pressured I can be but yeah some people need sales people some people down

  14. Consider gettin pros to clean. Basically, tap water contains minerals which will still be on your panels when the water dries. They might be cleaner than they started but not as clean as they can be. Pros will use a de-ioniser to remove these dissolved minerals from the water before cleaning.
Used to do it for work, much more often found that the increase in instantaneous output after a clean was between 10 and 30%, and this was regularly on systems that had been cleaned the year before. I live in queensland, aus, and we get a reasonable amount of rainfall each year. if you get less rain, or live in dusty, dirty, smoggy areas or near main roads, cleaning your panels will be even more lucrative

edit to add advice – get them done at least once a year

  15. If you would have taken the $10K and invested it in the market the last 10 years you would own the utility company by now…

  16. Well, energy prices would drop if only more competition was allowed in that particular marketplace. I live in Brazil and the energy cartel is so powerful that all those that use solar panels as a way to escape the big fees will have to pay an additional fee per kwh produced because "we're using the transmission lines". It's a law that should go in effect next year. There is no mention at all to how will the individual producers of energy using solar panels be reimbursed for the energy they deliver to the system (on-grid installations). It's a win-win for the cartel: they get paid rent for the wires that have been amortized decades ago and also have access to energy for which they don't pay. And I would've loved to go with an off-grid installation (batteries) but a) we do not produce them in Brazil and b) import fees are so high that I'd have to pay the equivalent of 1 battery for the government for every battery I'd import. Unfeasible.

  17. Its the contractors and labor that is outrageously expensive. If you need your roof replaced you will pay big for panel removal/re-installation. Need to stop all subsidizes to this industry. Then the real price will be dictated by the market. There will then be pressure on utilities to buy all of your excess power. Freedom not progressivism! That's the way to cleaner and free power.

  18. Same bankrupt thing for me. On my own. Need a new enphase reporter. $600 on me. Needed a new roof 5 years in. Wiped out all savings for 5 years. Savings were substantial, but wiped out to R&R the system. If you have the slightest doubt, re roof prior to installing solar.

  19. A diesel generator is both cheaper and better for the environment. And it lasts forever. But hey, “being green” have always been more about virtue signaling than actually doing something for the environment.
